From the acclaimed director Shinji Higuchi (SHIN GODZILLA, SHIN ULTRAMAN), known for blending spectacular visuals with compelling stories in his work, BULLET TRAIN EXPLOSION (新幹線大爆破, Shinkansen Daibakuha) is set to make its adrenaline-fueled premiere on April 23. This film is a reboot of the 1975 Toei movie THE BULLET TRAIN that starred Sonny Chiba and Ken Takakura. Director Higuchi, an avid fan of the original story, has reimagined the film for the modern day. This film stars Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, reuniting with director Higuchi after working together in DOOMSDAY: THE SINKING OF JAPAN (日本沈没, Nihon Chinbotsu, 2006).
Tension mounts aboard the Tohoku Shinkansen Hayabusa No. 60, bound for Tokyo, where a bomb is rigged to instantly detonate if the train's speed drops below 100 km/h. As panic grips the passengers following the announcement of conductor Takaichi (Tsuyoshi Kusanagi), the crew, passengers, and the Shinkansen General Operation Control Center race against time to avert disaster.
Joining Tsuyoshi Kusanagi is an ensemble of compelling characters, including conductor Fujii (Kanata Hosoda) and driver Matsumoto (Non). Also on board the Hayabusa are Kagami (Machiko Ono), a member of the House of Representatives; Todoroki (Jun Kaname), an entrepreneurial YouTuber; Yuzuki Onodera (Hana Toyoshima), a student on a school excursion; along with other passengers of diverse backgrounds. Takumi Saitoh plays Kasagi, the general commanding officer of the Shinkansen General Operation Control Center, orchestrating rescue efforts remotely.
With special cooperation from the East Japan Railway Company, the production used real bullet trains and railway facilities to achieve enhanced hyper-realistic visuals. Packed with non-stop suspense, the film will keep audiences breathless from start to finish.
Adding to the excitement is the new key art by Kyle Lambert, known for his work on STRANGER THINGS and ONE PIECE. His vibrant and dramatic style brings the film’s intensity to life, reminiscent of classic 1970s movie posters.
Lambert shares, “It is a great honor to be asked by Netflix to illustrate a poster for such a big and exciting new movie. I remember watching the US reimagined movie SPEED when I was growing up and I loved all of the action and suspense. For BULLET TRAIN EXPLOSION, I had the opportunity to create a dramatic poster that captures the intensity of the movie with high-speed action and excellent performances from the cast. I painted the artwork in my signature realistic style, with vibrant and eye-catching colors. I’m really happy with the finished artwork and I’m excited for everyone to see the movie!”

STORY
A tense phone call came into the Shinkansen General Operation Control Center. The caller claims that a bomb has been planted on the Hayabusa No. 60 bound for Tokyo, and that the bomb will explode as soon as the speed of the Shinkansen train drops below 100 km/h. The caller demands 100 billion yen in ransom money to disarm the bomb. The last-minute battle unfolds as the crew, passengers, and railroad workers strive to prevent the explosion within the limited time available. Will the running Hayabusa No. 60 be able to overcome this crisis?
