Following a North American theatrical run this past Spring, the 4K Digital Remaster of Studio Ghibli's classic KIKI’S DELIVERY SERVICE (魔女の宅急便, Majo no Takkyūbin, 1989) will receive a limited IMAX release in Japan starting June 19th, with a 2-week nationwide run kicking off July 3rd.
● Introduction
Since its release in 1989, KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE—a timeless masterpiece directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli—has remained a beloved classic. Based on the children's novel of the same name by Eiko Kadono, this animated feature tells the story of Kiki, a 13-year-old girl of witch lineage. Following witch tradition, she leaves her hometown with her black cat companion, Jiji, to begin life in an unfamiliar town as part of her training to become a full-fledged witch. Although she begins this new chapter filled with high hopes, things do not always go as planned. The film depicts her personal growth as she encounters a variety of people along the way.
While delicately portraying the nuanced emotions of an adolescent girl, the film also captivates audiences with elements unique to director Hayao Miyazaki’s style—such as dynamic scenes of Kiki flying through the sky on her broomstick and the stunning beauty of the townscape, which evokes the atmosphere of a European city. It is a masterpiece that has long held a special place in the hearts of viewers.
In this 4K digital remaster, every detail of the video is clearer, and the emotional expressions of Kiki, the cute movements of her black cat Jiji, the beautiful cityscape, and action scenes such as the exhilarating flight scene are even more prominent. In particular, when screening in IMAX, the high-definition images and clear sound projected on a large screen create an immersive feeling that makes you feel as if you have stepped into the world of the story, allowing you to experience a fresh impression as if you were seeing this work for the first time.
